Blackburn facing retirement

The New York Times had a story yesterday which outlined disabled goaltender Dan Blackburn's predicament.
He has an important decision to make about his future, and he has to make it soon.

"It is a very big decision," he said Tuesday in a telephone interview.

Blackburn can choose to retire prematurely to collect on a lucrative insurance policy or risk possibly millions of dollars by continuing his comeback attempt.

I wrote a story almost exactly a month ago for the National Post about Dan making his return to hockey. I've posted the story at my other blog.

I think we all know what decision he has to make here. It's a shame, but it's prety clear that his nerve problems in that shoulder are going to be chronic and permanent, and that his odds of getting back to the NHL were remote at best. A cautionary tale for every young draft pick who thinks the ride is going to last forever...
