And the preseason winners are...
As most NHL teams didn't play the same number of preseason games, it's hard to tell who were the better teams. So, here are my own conference standings based on preseason points percentage (*'s denote division leaders):
East
- *Ottawa, 87.5%
- *Philadelphia, 85.7
- Buffalo, 75
- *Carolina, 68.8
- Montreal, 62.5
- New Jersey, 60
- Florida, 58.3
- Boston, 56.3
- Toronto, 50
- NY Islanders, 50
- Atlanta, 42.9
- NY Rangers, 41.7
- Washington, 37.5
- Tampa Bay, 35.7
- Pittsburgh, 33.3
West
- *San Jose, 100%
- *Colorado, 83.3
- *St. Louis, 58.3
- Nashville, 57.1
- Vancouver, 57.1
- Calgary, 56.3
- Los Angeles, 56.3
- Dallas, 50
- Chicago, 50
- Detroit, 50
- Minnesota, 50
- Anaheim, 50
- Edmonton, 43.8
- Columbus, 33.3
- Phoenix, 25.0
The teams that did really well that surprise me are Buffalo, Carolina and St. Louis. Granted, it's preseason, but often a team that goes on a run in exhibition can translate those wins into some sort of success. Take note of San Jose, who went a perfect 7-0.
The only team that had a terrible preseason that comes as a surprise is Tampa Bay. The team's defensive depth has taken a hit during the layoff, as John Fontana at Boltsmag says, their fifth and sixth defensive pairing looks to be Nolan Pratt and either Timo Hebling or Andy Rogers, a 19-year-old from junior hockey. As I said, it's only preseason, but teams can often get mired in a funk to start the season.

Ottawa's 5th and 6th and Vancouver's 5th and 6th defencemen aren't really any better.
Calgary's are!
OK guys, I'm talking about Tampa Bay because they had a tough preseason. Not Washington, not Chicago, not the Mississippi Sea Wolves... Tampa. Their defensive depth took a hit. End of my comment.
