TSN on the top of its game

TSN.ca has always been the top website for NHL news, mainly due to the speed with which they get wire stories up onto their front page.

This year, however, I must say that I'm thoroughly impressed with the work being done by whoever is in charge of their NHL content this year. Not only are they still delivering stories with speed, they're also bringing a lot of orginal content, some of which cannot be found anywhere else on the web.

With things like line combinations, salary figures, a rookie watch, power rankings, a stat and quote of the day and, now, Ice Chips, they're really pulling away from the competition. Yes, the interface is a little busy, but with the amount of content being displayed, it's no wonder. The site would benefit from a purge of some of the less time-sensitive material, like the Nov. 7 Hall of Fame inductions (live on TSN!) and tribute to Mark Messier.

ESPN's statistics database is far more impressive and user-friendly, and Yahoo's scoreboard is cleaner and faster with updates, but if TSN's improvements are making it, more and more, a must-read for hockey fans.

ESPN has awesome box scores. For each player you get their number of shifts, their total minutes on ice, on powerplay/penalty killing, at even strength or with gastrointestinal disorder. Plus/minus, hits, takeaways, giveaways, face off record. For penalties it also identifies the victim of the foul. Here's an example:

I agree with you, James. For breaking news, etc., I find myself checking TSN much more often than I do Sportsnet now.

Have you guys checked out NHL.com's game stats? It's pretty impressive as well.

And Sportsnet's great addition to the online hockey world? Yeah, they hired Eklund.

Kind of puts them way down in the bush leagues eh? Idiots.
