Emery likes his bugs
Off Wing Opinion references an Ottawa Citizen story today that profiles Senators backup goaltender Ray Emery, and Eric picks out a quote that tells us a little bit about the guy. In case you didn't click on the story for a read, however, here's a detail that makes the story:
Emery financed the tattoo with the $500 he collected in a bet with captain Daniel Alfredsson. Alfredsson had challenged Emery to eat a cockroach that was scampering through the team's dressing room when the Senators were in Raleigh, North Carolina, for a game in late October.Emery munched away and won.
Hah. And you have to know that when Ken Warren heard that, he was thinking one thing: "Well, there's my lede."
Every hockey team's got at least one guy like that — the crazy guy — and you have to know that when Alfredsson saw the bug, there was only one player he thought to ask to eat the damn thing.

Reminds me of Mike Maksudian, the former Toronto Blue Jay, who once ate a live locust for $800 pooled together by his teammates.
About a month or so ago, there was a huge photo of Emery on the front of the Ottawa Sun, getting his tatoo done. I'm sure the Senators brass were delighted at the wholesome image that portrayed to all their young fans.
It's just a coincidence that both of these guys ate bugs while playing for Canadien teams? :)
Rex Hudler has told a great story on the Jim Rome show a couple of times about eating a junebug for ~$700.
Was that during Hudler's time with the Montreal Expos? Is there a trend here?
How about this for a contrast: Emery eats bugs and gets tatoos, Jason Spezza drops this quote in reference to Emery: "First of all, he's a goalie. He beats to his own drum. He's a leader, not a follower. Razor definitely does his own thing."
I wonder if there was a guy standing behind the reporter holding up flash cards or something. Yeesh
