On Shootouts

2005-2006 NHL Shootout Details

Shootouts: 66
Total games: 667
% of games going to shootouts: 9.9%

Fewer NHL games are progressing past regulation than in 2003-04 when 13.8 per cent of games ended in ties. And while I may have been critical of shootouts in the past, I've since changed my mind.

Goals: 144
Attempts: 442
Shooting %: 32.58%

Conventional statistics put shooting accuracy in penalty shots during the course of NHL games at 40 per cent, but it comes as little surprise that with more shots, goalies are getting more accustomed to stopping attempts. One wonders how long it is before the league wants to increase the number of shootout goals being scored (I'm kidding, of course).

Players who have yet to miss (two or more attempts): 5, Jussi Jokinen; 3, Jaroslav Balastik; 2, Alex Frolov, Pierre Dagenais, Trent Hunter, Mikael Holmqvist, Geoff Sanderson, Daniel Briere.

Top shootout teams: Dallas 5-0, Los Angeles 3-0, Detroit 1-0, NY Rangers 4-1.
Worst shootout teams: Boston 0-3, Anaheim 1-4, Atlanta 1-4, San Jose 1-4.
