Ovechkin: Video evidence

Very, very few NHL players have a career that can be boiled down to a highlight package as impressive as this.

The thing is, how many players can that be said about after just 49 games? Sasha Ovechkin's puck-to-skate-to-stick manoeuvres are amazing, and it's almost a sixth sense for him, whereby he always, always knows where the puck is and where he wants it to go.

I know this is something that has been beaten to death, but Ovechkin has nearly 2.5 times more points than his nearest teammate — something that may be an NHL record. If he was playing on a team that had even a modicum more talent than the C(r)apitals, just imagine where he'd be in the scoring race (he's currently on pace to finish 6th in NHL scoring with 127 points).

It says here that if Ovechkin played for, say, the Pittsburgh Penguins, a team with a far better power play (14th) than Washington's (28th), he'd be leading the league in scoring.

Ovechkin is extraordinary but it seems odd that his regular linemates dont get more points - as Recchi and Palffy do/did from Crosby. Is it that he doesnt have regular linemates, never passes, or what?

He just doesn't have any linemates with the abilities of a Recchi or a Palffy.

The NHL ought to take some of those clips and make a commercial out of it. If they want to market the game, showcasing their athletes like that is the way to do it, not using actors in badly a scripted/shot mini-series of commercials that just make me, and any serious hockey fan, cringe.

And those Ovechkin plays are just a sampling of what has gone on so far this season (albeit a very good sampling). Instead of seeing a collection of actual great plays, viewers are treated to images of a dimly lit arena with stereotypically portrayed good guys/bad guys.
