THN's need-to-know guys

The Jan. 17 issue of The Hockey News names the NHL’s 30 need-to-know guys, the players who have come up big for their teams but have gone under the radar. There are some interesting selections.

Anaheim. Andy McDonald
Atlanta. Niclas Havelid
Boston. Brad Stuart
Buffalo. Ales Kotalik
Calgary. Robyn Regehr
Carolina. Justin Williams
Chicago. Duncan Keith
Colorado. Andrew Brunette
Columbus. David Vyborny
Dallas. Trevor Daley
Detroit. Tomas Holmstrom
Edmonton. Jarret Stoll
Florida. Stephen Weiss
Los Angeles. Dustin Brown
Minnesota. Willie Mitchell
Montreal. Steve Begin
Nashville. Scott Hartnell
New Jersey. Paul Martin
NY Islanders. Jason Blake
NY Rangers. Jed Ortmeyer
Ottawa. Mike Fisher
Philadelphia. Mike Knuble
Phoenix. Jamie Lundmark
Pittsburgh. Tomas Surovy
San Jose. Tom Preissing
St. Louis. Petr Cajanek
Tampa Bay. Danny Boyle
Toronto. Alexei Ponikarovsky
Vancouver. Matt Cooke
Washington. Jamie Heward

And you know what? You do need to know these guys.

I try to see as much of every team as I can, but it’s obviously impossible to have seen enough of all of the unheralded players here. I nod in agreement with most of them — Regehr, Williams, Mitchell, Stoll, Begin, Ortmeyer, and Preissing are all great picks. Others, like Fisher and Heward, I’ve talked about already this season as pleasant surprises for their teams.

The ones that come as a surprise are guys like Daley, Vyborny, Weiss (who is now out for the season due to injury) and Surovy, which shows me what teams I need to be following a little more closely. Although I did catch most of a riveting Columbus-Pittsburgh game last night.

I'd put Tim Connolly ahead of Ales Kotalik on the Sabres, but he is a worthy choice as well.
