The experts weigh in

For Globe and Mail subscribers on Wednesday...

The Hockey News 'Special Edition': Hockey Experts Team Up

Some evil genius has dreamed up a publiction where the hockey guys from The Hockey News and The Globe and Mail all got together, wrote a bunch of playoff goodness, and stuffed it into one big satisfying magazine. The thing is 48 pages, and it's all excellent stuff (for THN subscribers, however, some of the material is duplicated from the latest issue).

You'll have to get your hands on one of them for all of that goodness, but here's a quick look at THN's Stanley Cup odds and the experts' predictions:

THN's odds of winning the Cup:
Ottawa 3-1
Detroit 4-1
Dallas 4-1
Carolina 6-1
Calgary 7-1
N.Y. Rangers 8-1
Philadelphia 9-1
Anaheim 10-1
Buffalo 14-1
San Jose 15-1
Tampa Bay 18-1
Colorado 20-1
Edmonton 20-1
Nashville 22-1
New Jersey 25-1
Montreal 25-1
Atlanta 75-1

I disagree with a ton of those, so I'll have to offer my own odds here, likely tomorrow. (Without Hasek, which the Senators will almost certainly be to start the postseason, there's simply no way Ottawa is a 3-1 favourite to win the Cup.)

As for the experts' predictions, here are their picks for the Cup matchup (each expert also makes picks for the various Conference matchups and postseason award winners, but I can't give everything away, now can I?):

Ottawa def. Dallas
Mike Brophy
THN senior writer

Ottawa def. Detroit
Jason Kay
THN overlord

Detroit def. Ottawa
Mark Brender
THN senior writer

Dallas def. Carolina
Adam Proteau
THN.com writer

Ottawa def. Dallas
Eric Duhatschek
The Globe and Mail, hockey columnist

Ottawa def. Detroit
David Naylor
The Globe and Mail, Senators/Canadiens columnist

Detroit def. Ottawa
Grant Kerr
The Globe and Mail, Canucks columnist

Ottawa def. Dallas
David Shoalts
The Globe and Mail, Maple Leafs columnist

Ottawa def. Calgary
Allan Maki
The Globe and Mail, Flames columnist

Detroit def. Ottawa
Tim Wharnsby
The Globe and Mail, hockey reporter

And who says the sports media doesn't offer a variety of opinion? Yikes — lots and lots of love for the Senators, who have played very poorly lately. My old pal Adam Proteau is the only pundit who doesn't pick Ottawa to win out of the East, and for that, he gets a gold star (and another appearance on OTR.

I'll tell you one thing: If by some chance you're headed to Vegas in the near future, bet heavily on Ottawa not making it to the Stanley Cup finals.

All of my extensive body of playoff material, including predictions, will be going up Tuesday to Thursday, so stay tuned.

This would of course depend on the odds that you got but it makes sense to bet heavily against any team making the Stanley Cup finals most years. I doubt that there's been a team that's strong enough for it to be a smart bet that they'd make the Cup finals since the mid 80's or possibly even the late 70's.

Unfortunately, you aren't allowed to short contracts in Vegas. You can't simply bet against the Senators to make the Finals. There is probably some formula one could use to put bets on all of the other teams that would be the equivalent of shorting the Senators, but the vig of making seven seperate bets to do so will likely eliminate any possibility of coming out ahead.

New Jersey at 25-1 would be an excellent bet. The way they are playing and having the most experienced (almost only experienced) goalie in the east gives them a big advantage.
