Koivu's eye injury 'serious'
One commentator said today that Saku Koivu's injury is "as gruesome an eye injury as we've seen in the NHL."
That's a pretty alarming statement for anyone who remembers the Bryan Berard incident that resulted in him sustaining an inch-wide gash and losing almost total vision in his right eye.
The really tough thing about the whole play is that Koivu was wearing a visor, but Justin Williams's stick came from underneath (and did so with a ton of force). Koivu continues to remain in a Montreal hospital today, and doctors have said we won't know for a few days yet the full extent of the damage. Here's Sisu Hockey:
Ya know, people tend to mellow out with age. Now that I'm sprouting the odd grey hair, there are very few things that could cause me to regress into a fit of blind fanboy rage. Losing the captain to an unpunished high stick is one of them. In case you hadn't figured it out, the URL near the top of your screen is a tip o' the hat to the NHL's most inspirational player. It won't be easy, but with a little restraint, we'll keep things civil here today. While Koivu is merely a part of the success the Canadiens have had since the Olympic break, he is this team's emotional leader and losing him could represent a turning point in a series that seemed all but over before last night's overtime winner by Erik Staal. Montreal is really going to have to make a push to take a 3-1 stranglehold with a win tomorrow.
Otherwise, if you believe in momentum, it'll all be going Carolina's way.
