Momentum watch

Matt Fenwick at the Battle of Alberta is doing some good work in the corners today, coming up with a look at how all 30 NHL teams have performed in the four quarters of the season.

While a lot of hockey pundits in the blogosphere disagree that a late-season surge means anything to a team's Cup hopes, I really would bet against any team that's recently been playing poorly winning the thing. That means you Edmonton, Tampa Bay, Philadelphia and Buffalo.

Does that mean the hottest team, Detroit, wins by default? Hardly.

You are going to be the perfect journalist. You never tell us anything we already don't know and you never stop the balance on the fence. What is it about news folk that prevents a backbone?

Fire me an email, and I'll answer whatever you like. (Playoff predictions will be up in the next couple of days, which is why I'm hedging things here).

what, winning 6 of their past 7 isn't good enough for Buffalo?

and, these wins (except for the most recent pasting of the Leafs) were against teams either playing for their playoff lives (Montreal and, at the time, Toronto) or battling for tops in the conference (Ottawa).
