Sweep watch 2006

All four series tonight are currently sitting at 2-0, and should the team on top win again, it'll push their opponent to the brink of elimination.

Going down 3-0 is a near impossible deficit to rally from, meaning those teams are pretty good candidates for a good old four-game sweep.

Who will it be?

My completely unscientific
odds they'll sweep

Colorado 3-1
New Jersey 4-1
Montreal 6-1
Buffalo 8-1

I'll let the math gurus figure out what the 'real' odds are.

Why is Colorado more likely to sweep than New Jersey, in your opinion? The Rangers will bend over with no Jagr and Weekes in goal (and even Turco in the playoffs is better than Weekes on his best day), whereas the Stars have at least shown signs of life.

No love for the Sabres... Forget the fact that it is very difficult to sweep ANY team, but there of all the teams listed, only one exposed their opponent as too slow and too undisciplined to compete.

I'd put the odds of a sweep by any of these teams at less than a quarter and I'd have Colorado (as much as I'd love to see it) with the worst odds.

Since the NHL went to a best-of-seven playoff format, only two teams in its history - the 1942 Maple Leafs and the 1975 Islanders - have rallied from 0-3 deficits. If any team falls behind by the same margin in this year's first round, the odds are solidly against a rally.

The Avalanche have the next two games at home; the Devils are at Madison Square Garden. I think the chances of the Rangers winning one of those games are slightly higher than the odds the Stars face.

I think you're a bit off.

NJ 5-2 (NJ 8-5 faves tonight)
MTL 7-2 (pick 'em tonight)
COL 9-2 (pick 'em tonight)
BUF 5-1 (PHI -120 tonight)

I would LOVE it if Colorado could sweep, but Dallas is starting to show signs of life again. Just look at that 2nd period last night; what a difference from the 1st.

And I sure hope New Jersey sweeps. Never thought I'd say that, but I loathe the Rangers.
