By the skin of their teeth

It's certainly possible that no one in North America batted an eye when Switzerland lost 2-1 to Belarus on Tuesday at the World Hockey Championship. The thing is, however, it had some implications on this side of the Atlantic, namely for the struggling USA Hockey program.

You see, the Swiss team, currently ranked 8th in the world, was so very close to knocking the Americans down a spot in the World Rankings, and a win against Belarus would have went a long way towards that. As it stands, the U.S. hangs onto their membership in the 'Big 7' of international hockey — but just barely. A fall to 8th would, I believe, mark a new low for Team USA.

And they have Belarus to thank.

Ouch. I mean...damn. That's a definite fall from silver in '02.

I seem to recall something similar happened only a few years ago. Team USA needed to play in some sort of IIHF qualifying tournament to get back in the top 8.
