The man behind the muscle

We all know Rod Brind'Amour's an extremely fit, hard-nosed player. And we've also heard all kinds of talk these playoffs about his faceoff prowess — something that really can't be denied. But Pierre McGuire's latest piece for TSN made me scratch my head, if only for a small detail:
When it comes to the Oilers on the draw, Peca, Jarret Stoll and Shawn Horcoff entered the final with a faceoff success rate of more than 50 percent. That number has not been as good through the first two games.

A big reason for that has been Brind'Amour. The Oilers are concerned that he does not line up square on the draw and is turned when the puck drops. The NHL's best faceoff man is also a lot bigger and can out-muscle guys like Horcoff at the circle.
Now, the thing is, Horcoff is far from a small player — Peca, yes, but not Horcoff. In fact, he's even slightly bigger than Rod 'The Bod'.

Based even just on TSN's own roster details, both are listed as being 6 foot 1, Brind'Amour weighing 200 pounds and Horcoff 204. In terms of relative strength, Brind'Amour might be able to best players far bigger than himself, but his actual, physical size isn't super-human like Eric Staal or Chris Pronger.

As I said, it's a small point, but it had to be said.

Unlike Keith Tkachunk, Rod's bod is lean and cut. Those 200 pounds are the highest quality 200 pounds you will see out of a player. Brind'Amour maximizes his training so that his muscle is 'practical'

Muscle doesn't always equal success and strength.

Look at Jiri Slegr. The d00d is damn buff and cut, but he's a poor fighter and not all that strong in front of his net. He's got a lot of that 'show' muscle that looks good for the ladies and guys, but doesn't get the same efficiency of strength as a Brind'Amour

TSN is just shoddy-their analysis has a loose connection to fact. Bob McKenzie kept raving about how Carolina has the best PP that the Oilers have seen-better than Anaheim, Detroit and San Jose. None of that was true during the regular season, so who knows what these people are on about.

Apparently the Oilers are so confident in Brind'Amour's faceoff infractions that they sent a tape of footage to the NHL. Horcoff was pretty obviously PO'd about it the first game.
