Stanley in the News

A pictorial
I'd wanted to do a quick runthrough of all the newspaper's coverage of the Carolina Hurricanes' Stanley Cup win yesterday, but just wasn't able to find the time. Here's my best attempt — a day after the fact.
All of these images are owned by their respective papers and most are hosted only temporarily on my own server. (Please do not link directly to the hosted images or they'll have to come down.)
The Globe and Mail
Starting close to home, of course

A beautifully designed paper, I might add

The other end of the home-team spectrum

A smart choice to go with a jubilation shot

Canada's largest daily

Another North Carolina entry, also an Observer

The smallest paper I've listed, they've got a neat little 'local connection' feature on Rod Brind'Amour's real hometown, Campbell River, B.C. (he's often listed as being from Ottawa, where he was born)

Some small skybox treatment here

I looked far and wide for some international, front-page play for the Cup (Sweden, Finland, Russia) but drew a blank. If you've seen one, pass it along. (Pravda celebrates Frankie Kaberle's contributions: Stanley cup zdivhl aj Cech Kaberle!)

Chances the Cup gets skybox play had the Lightning not won in 2004? Zero. Still, this is good to see.

Very nice stuff. The reason why there's probably nothing in Finland, Sweden, and Russia, is because between them, they have exactly one active player (Wallin, Sweden) on the winning team and three (Markkanen, Finland; Tarnstrom, Sweden; Samsonov, Russia) on the losing squad. The Czech Republic, however, is relatively well-represented on both teams (two on Carolina, three on Edmonton). Have you tried Switzerland for the Gerber angle?
Bah, leave out those rats in Charlotte, well at least their paper. The Charlotte Observer has done nothing but make snide comments about the Canes since they came to town. There are people in Charlotte who will drive the 3 hours for a game but their media would like to forget that the Canes exist.
Thank you, nice post.
Thanks muchly! I enjoyed seeing the Canadian perspective.
I know the Calgary Sun had the token Brind'Amour shot with "SPOILED" (I GET IT!!) as the headline. I did like the rejected headline, Edmont-OWN3D....though I'm sure they didn't want to go that far.
I love the Observer photos. Best ones by FAR. Brind'Amour looks almost iconic.
