Writers protest Lady Byng

One hockey writer obviously doesn't have much time for the Lady Byng Trophy, handing Minnesota Wild tough guy Derek Boogaard a first-place vote for the award presented to the player exhibiting the most gentlemently conduct.

Boogaard finished third in the NHL with 16 fighting majors this season, second only to Brian McGrattan with 19 and George Parros with 18.

Ottawa's McGrattan also got a fourth-place vote for the Lady Byng, won Thursday night by Detroit's Pavel Datsyuk.
I'm sure this is something the PHWA will address this summer, as I'm not sure the league will want to continue to hand out an award that the voters aren't taking seriously.

How about revoking the voting rights of that jackass? It's not a right, and that writer obviously didn't take his job seriously.

These guys and gals are given a responsibility and need to do the right thing, even if they think the award is silly for some reason. Just abstain if you really must, but don't make a mockery of the award. As much as the Byng can be seen as silly, there really is a benefit to having skilled players who don't take a lot of stupid penalties and play with class.

I agree there is a benefit, but reaching a consensus for the Byng is nigh impossible.

Of course there's a benefit to having players like that - but perhaps that vote was the only way to start a discussion about how to change the award or give it a different set of criteria so there's more of a majority opinion when picking a winner.

Absolutely meaningless stat: McGrattan only had 7 more minors than Datsyuk.

AMEN!!

All I can really say is that if it ever gets to the point that the Lady Byng is not handed out anymore, I will be one teed off puppy. As one of the largest nut...er, fans of Ron Francis (who, as many should know, was a three time winner of the Byng), it will really sadden me to see what *should* be considered a significant award go down the toilet like that.

Hell, it already depresses me to see people treat an award given out for class like it's some kind of insult (*cough*Alexander Mogilny in 2003*cough*), when it is certainly far from it.

If such a fate should befall the Lady, then I don't see how the King Clancy would be too far behind since that awards class in the form of charity work.
