Playing with the leftovers
Team-building with the last of the free agents
Originally posted Aug. 1 — see updates at bottom
Some people were asking this a few weeks ago, but that was far too early. No, now — as August begins — it's time to wonder, 'Who on earth is left?'
With so many teams up against the salary cap, there could definitely be some deals to be had here. With that in mind, I present to you: The Team of the Unwanted.
Forwards
V. Kozlov - Allison -
Dumont - Perreault - Carter
Bondra - Hrdina - Dvorak
Daze
Defence
Leetch -
Tarnstrom - Suchy
Marchment
Goal
In the system: (F) V. Bure,
Now, my question to you is, where would that team finish in the standings?
UPDATE Aug. 2: Rucinsky goes to St. Louis, McAmmond to Ottawa. Also, as GM of this new team, my ears are burning.
UPDATE Aug. 15: Sykora signs in Edmonton, Johnson in Detroit, Desjardins and Weinrich retire, Legace finally finds a home in St. Louis, Hill heads to the Isles and Varada is off to Switzerland. My roster — it's been decimated!
UPDATE Aug. 15: Added two newcomers in Dumont and Tanabe.
UPDATE Aug. 16: Owen Nolan signs on with Phoenix.
UPDATE Aug. 24: Boguniecki signs with Columbus (nice pickup), Fitzpatrick with Vancouver.

This team would definitely not make the playoffs, and let far too many goals against.
Bondra is basically going to retire, although there are rumblings he may end up in Washington for a farewell season
Kvasha is definitely the most underrated of the bunch.
Czerkawski signed in Europe recently, so technically he's not a free agent. Might have to call up Owen Nolan.
Which forwards would play the penalty kill?
I think they'd be killed by the lack of defensive forwards, speed, and prone to injury.
Byron Dafoe hasn't played anywhere in two seasons. I don't think he's filed retirement papers at any point, but he probably shouldn't be considered an active player.
Back up a bit. For $956.00 someone gets a ticket to your apartment? What's included in that? Do you accept mastercard?
I kid.
I'm sure Dvorak will end up an Oiler. They're moving so slow now signing players like Dvo, Lupul, etc.
Chiodo?
isn't that an Italian soda?
Daze? Can he even manage to walk to his car, let alone drive to the rink or play on a second line somewhere?
For the life of me, I can't figure out why someone hasn't signed Legace. All the guy does is stop pucks and win. How is he not an upgrade on Cloutier for the Kings? Ottawa also could have signed up at a significant savings to what they are paying Gerber. I don't get it -- if someone out there knows why this guy seems to be unwanted, let me know, because I don't get it.
If you were a GM would you want to sign the goalie who commented on his playoff performance by saying "I feel like I should hang myself" or something to that effect. Legace should have a starting job somewhere but I think alot of people have been left questioning his mental toughness. The last thing you want is for your starting goalie to pull a Tommy Salo on you.
Wasn't that the Maple Leafs roster after the 2003-04 Trade Deadline?
Kvasha is underrated?!!?
Yeah, Daze is done like dinner. I would put Mike Leclerc in there instead!!
Mirtle, you look a little thin on the wing. Why not consider a guy like J.P. Dumont?
James
You can add Tanabe to that squad along with Dumont
Good point, guys.
Tarnstrom has signed with Lugano.
Tarnstrom's out clause leads me to believe he'll still sign in the NHL.
David Tanabe was spotted in Raleigh having lunch with Jim Rutherford and Peter Laviolette today.
Make what you will of that.
I don't understand why Kvasha is unsigned. He still seems like he'd be a solid pickup, and I can't see him demanding big dollars.
Tanabe is now a Canes. The Canes may be after Isbister as well
