Wang strikes again

The Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs of the Central Hockey League have announced today that play-by-play broadcaster Steve Mears will be leaving the team after serving as the Director of Media Relations and Broadcasting for the past four seasons.

Mears has accepted a position to be the radio play-by-play broadcaster for the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League.

Having grown up in the area and having actually been to a Mudbugs' game, I may be one of the few people who understands just how funny this is. Let me know when the Atlanta Braves hire a local play by play guy from Moose Jaw.

This may be the one smart thing Wang has done this summer. Mears is a terrific announcer and a super guy. He won't disappoint. Please don't do him a disservice by dismissing him because of where he's coming from. Everybody has to start somewhere.

While it does seem a curious move for someone to make such a large leap, I've never heard his play-by-play work and am not really in a position to comment on it. Maybe he's wholly qualified and will impress everyone.

The last thing I'd want to do is dismiss someone simply because of where they're coming from; I wouldn't have made it anywhere in this business if people took that approach with me.
