Replacing Mario

The Pittsburgh Penguins haven't had a captain since team owner Mario Lemieux's retirement midway through last year, but come October, they'll have their first new captain since 2001.

I expect this one will be pretty evenly split between two players.

Who should be the next captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins?
Sidney Crosby
Sergei Gonchar
John LeClair
Mark Recchi

The rest of the series

Replacing Stevie Y. (Detroit)
Replacing Jumbo Joe (Boston)
Replacing Johnson (Nashville)
Replacing the Scotts (New Jersey)

Its all about Sid the Kid. Give him the reigns. As far as the age thing- who cares? he is the face of the org, the person people are looking to to carry this team why not give him the C? Sure inside the lockerroom Gonchar carries more weight but if Sid is the Pens present and future, give em the C.

This is a difficult decision. I would normally pick recchi but he clashed with crosby and he is the future of the organization. Leclair would also be ideal but if i remember correctly he was pissed last season because he wasn't traded at the deadline so he is out too. Crosby is not my choice, not because of age but cause i don't think the veterens will respond to him and it migt create animosity and there is no reason to have a fued in the dressing room if you can avoid it. That said i think it should go to Gonchar as he seems to be nuetral and if it can boost his game a step higher possibly then why not. Capt=Gonchar with Crosby and Recchi as assistants.

It won't be Recchi...he's not a leader in the wya you want your captain to be. Gonchar maybe. Sid's a year away.

qi find it sad that the clear favourites in half of these polls are the oldest canadian guy available. as if mark recchi or glen murray or steve sullivan or even paul kariya should be the captains of their teams.

what pittsburgh should do is name a slightly older young player captain. i don't know who on the team is deserving... maybe someone like ryan malone (i'm just picking a young player at random here) can keep the "c" warm for crosby. but, for the same reasons sean gave, it doesn't make much sense to name recchi or leclair captain. it'll be crosby's in a year, but i think a player's third year is the earliest he should get it.
