Tough times for Sharks goalie coach

From an excellent story by David Pollack in today's San Jose Mercury News:
"They had me not living through the night three different times," said Strelow, 72. "It was pretty touch and go."

But now Strelow is taking part in his first training camp in four years. And although his health problems have limited his mobility — Strelow uses a motorized scooter on the ice, for example — they have not damaged what goaltender Evgeni Nabokov calls his 'gifted eye.'
A good reason to keep an eye on the Sharks and cheer on their Stanley Cup pursuit.

As Pollack notes, Strelow has quite the history, including stints with the 1980 U.S. Miracle on Ice team and as the goaltending coach for guys like Pete Peeters and Clint Malarchuk with the Washington Capitals in the 1980s.

I should cheer for the Sharks because their old fart of a goalie coach uses a motorized scooter? who the hell cares? Generating fake sympathy simply to cheer for a hockey team is such a media creation. Methinks you're in too deep.

You can cheer for whoever you want, for whatever reasons you want.

This isn't fake sympathy.

It is a very compelling story. It is hard not to want his team to get a Stanley Cup for him.

But you also can not argue with his results, Kiprusoff, Nabokov, and Toskala swear by him. Hedberg had a run last year, and SJ had goalies earn player of the month/week in the AHL, ECHL, and DEL.

The one thing I would like to read about Strelow, and I think a lot of Sharks fans would benefit from, is what advice is he passing along to his goaltenders. What is his philosophy, and why is it more successful, etc.

There were times when he was really sick that people said he would be lucky to live. A lot of them had the tone that he would never make it back to the ice. So Sharks goaltending coach, Kings goaltending coach, or Columbus goaltending coach, I hope his charges do well.
