Most games played by a head coach

With new Montreal Canadiens head coach Guy Carbonneau making his (unsuccessful) debut in Buffalo tonight, there's been all kinds of talk about the longevity the former Habs captain had during his playing career.

Carbonneau played 1,308 regular-season games from 1980 to 2000, putting him 35th on the all-time games played listing.

It's a factoid that made me curious to see what other NHL coaches had such substantial playing careers. Here's a list of the Top 10 (above) or for the full 30, including the 10 NHL coaches without a single game of playing experience, see this Google spreadsheet.

UPDATE I hadn't realized it when I posted the link, but the spreadsheet above also allows users to chat to each other in the window. And interesting, and unexpected, benefit of the software.

Very good way to use Google Spreadsheets, most useful one I have seen yet.

1) Carbs better get more consistency from his squad, else he won't be setting any records in COACHING longevity!
