THN's cover curse

The Hockey News' editor in chief Jason Kay mentioned the 'cover curse' in his front of the magazine column last week, talking about how the THN crew had planned to use Martin Havlat as that week's cover boy — until he got hurt.

Gordie Howe ended up making a great cover story instead, and I didn't think much of 'the curse' until this week's issue arrived in my mailbox — with Maxim Afinogenov on the cover.

Maybe there's something to this bad luck business, after all.

Now, I don't know if any of the fine editorial wizards up town read this site, but just in case, I'll plead that they keep all members of my hockey pool team far, far away from cover consideration. Namely Petr Sykora, Patrice Bergeron, Mike Modano, Jason Arnott and Mike Cammalleri (among others).

And please keep any other Buffalo Sabres off the cover!!!!

Although if you are a Flyers fan I guess you wouldn't mind seeing ol Hatcher on there...

The rational explanation for "cover curses" is that a player who gets on the cover is usually playing "over his head" since he is often standing out above and beyond the level where he was expected (Havlat and Afinogenov are prime examples) and such a player likely wont keep up that level of play regardless of the cover and a slump, injury or some other regression to the mean is fully expected.

Good, I can blame THN for it. I am quite far ahead in first place in my pool, but with Afi getting hurt, it's going to hurt me as well. Thanks THN.

The thing with THN, and I'm relatively familiar with their press schedule, is that the amount of time between the editorial content deadline and when it hits the newsstand is only three or four days. That means the player has to be injured during that interim, or else they'll have time to change the cover — which makes the 'curse' all the more potent.

So, how does the Indian MPs visit to Lebanon effect the interconference scheduling? And what of his opinion about the officiating in the Edmonton/Dallas game?
