Causing a stir

Billy Tibbetts = controversial in any language

I honestly have no clue what they're talking about, but there have been more than 300 replies in a thread that was started a little less than seven hours ago. My guess is Tibbetts has arrived to play in Finland, and as is the case wherever he goes, a familiar debate about his past is taking place — in Finnish. (And a link to my site means, for the first time ever, the majority of visitors here today are from Finland. "Tervetuloa!" to you, newcomers.)

If anyone has more information — or can translate a little — please feel free to drop me an email.

UPDATE Well, that was quick. Finnish readers, to the rescue...

It turns out that Tibbetts has, indeed, signed on with HPK Hämeenlinna in the Finnish elite league, and his presence there has the hockey community in a bit of a huff.

Here's an email from Ilkka: "The conversation was at first mostly about how Tibbets is playing and that kind of stuff. We discussed about the stats and how he would help the team. Btw the team HPK where he is coming won the cup last year. The talking was nice and analyzing but then someone drew the rape card from sleeve..... Now the conversation has become mostly moralizing and arguing about how bad fellow he is and that kind of stuff."

Tero has a few more thoughts: "Nobody here in Finland knows what has really happened, but still many people are judging him and don't want to see him playing here. And some want to almost kill him. And all this before they have ever seen him playing. There's not much speculation of his role in HPK or his playing skills."

And people thought North American hockey fans were tough.

My sincere thanks to Ilkka, Tero and their other countrymen who sent messages. Such a friendly bunch these Finns — I can't wait to visit there at some point.

In our neighbourhood people are carrying serious weapon arsenal to secure our children. My child will not be molested, not by Tibbets!

Go Home Sucker!

Are all people in Finland crazy, or just the ones who post here? If memory serves, his crime was statutory rape. As in, she told me she was 18, blah, blah, blah. That's hardly the same as being a child molester.

If you google around, there is a nice article from the Idaho Statesman that tell the WHOLE story on Tibbetts.

Basically, everything was fine then the next day she called rape on fellatio. No intercourse.

Tibbetts has skills...

It might just be that any sort of 'rape' riles up the Finns...But any players entering the Finnish Elite League from North America cause quite a stir. It's a different mindset from what Canadian kids have; it's not "Junior wants to be a hockey player in the NHL", it's "Ville wants to make the Finnish League, and if he's a supremely gifted prodigy he might play a game or two in the NHL".
In Finland, the NHL is heaven, and Finnish players (no matter how unachieving) are gods.

So who is the bigger sports star in Finland, Kimi Raikkonen or Saku Koivu?

For me neither of them. Saku is still ahead of Kimi but Teemu is a semi-god for me.

I know Billy well. A great guy. His only downfall is his short fuse. His sex offense was with a teenager, while he was a teenager and it was for oral sex. Pretty hard to force someone to do that. It ruined his life.
Don't judge this guy until you see him play. His past is behind him.
As for children, this guy is the farthest thing fom a pedophile in the world.

He can score goals, fight, and skate like the wind. Give him a chance, he'll put up big numbers and be a huge fan favorite, if given the chance.

I agree with Mad Dog Vinny from Pittsburgh.

My brief encounter with him, tells me that Tibbsy is a cool cat. A wild man & great with the fans and the farthest thing from a sexual predator in the world.

He can drop the gloves & score big goals. He was a demiGod in Wilkes Barre and very popular in Pittsburgh. He isnt afraid to play in traffic and puts up points everywhere he goes. If you are Christian, give the guy a chance! He's running out of them and fans get pissed everytime he leaves their city. The guy is a nut that plays with a ton of heart!!!!!!!

Pretty good first game for Billy in finnish major league; 0+1, no penalties, 3 shots and +/- is +1.
In ice maybe less than a 20 times inc. this first game.
He will come again, I think, if he stay cool and focus to do some goals and help his team to win.
Sorry my bad english.

2nd game; 2+1, one penalty (2min) for slashing and 2nd goal was a game winning goal on overtime.

Tibbetts is too good for this league. HE belongs in the NHL.

I agree... no Finn would ever drop the gloves with him. They'd get pulverized. It looks like he's playing well there. 4 pts in two games, good average. The fans should catch on there. Like him or not, he's an exciting player to watch. His slapshot is almost as hard as mine..

I don`t agree, Nielikainen and Helenius will drop gloves if necessery. Nielikainen will try that, I`m pretty sure.
2nd game couple of players try to heat him up but Billy just give them a big smile...
Today HPK play their first game in European Champions Cup (St. Petersburg, Russia) against MsHK Zilina, Slovakia. HPK won 7-0, Billy 1+1.

"One more burned bridge behind". As finnish biggest hockey forum columnist says.
Billy had a chance to leave when he wants during his try-out contract. And so he did. Tuesday mornig he just disappeared. Few hours later he signed contract with other finnish team Hifk.
He didn´t say even goodbye to anyone of his teammates in Hpk. Everyone in Hpk really tried to make hard work that Billy would have a good time in Hämeenlinna but that´s the result. There has been lot of rumours about Billys affect to team spirit. Just wondering why....AGAIN?

Sorry about my bad english.
