Gretzky and SI

Wayne Gretzky was on the cover of Sports Illustrated a total of 12 times since he joined the NHL in 1979, which makes you wonder just how many times, total, hockey has been on the magazine's cover the past 28 or so years.

Damn, that's a good question.... can anyone remember the last hockey cover (other than an annual preview)?

S.I.'s not that relevant to me these days, so I can't answer.

Not sure this link'll work and forgive my lack of html but: http://dynamic.si.cnn.com/covers/search?searchSpec=hockey&page=1

should bring up 103 issues with hockey at least mentioned on the front cover, over the history of the magazine.

Looks like 6 full page hockey covers since the 1999 Gretzky retirement issue.

Yzerman, Lemieux comeback, Knutsen fan death, Bourque Cup, Devils/Stars and the Wings on an NHL preview ish.
