Sens-less promo?
Thanks to the reader who sent this info in:
...apparently at the Habs-Senators game at Scotiabank today there was a video clip or something on the scoreboard promoting a contest where the Senators are giving away a trip to Barbados (or something).
The clip showed Spartacat, the Sens mascot, pushing a fan in a Montreal sweater overboard. Apparently the Montreal media are just flipping out, considering the circumstances that Bob Gainey's daughter Laura died under.

Not sure the Barbados promotion had anything to do with it. The skit clip with Spartacat plays before every game. The sweater of the adversary changes by game. Pretty thoughtless oversight. There's more here if interested.

Actually I was at the game and the actor playing the Montreal Fan jumps over board before Spartacat gets to him. Stupid humour as always from Sparty but in poor taste I don't think so.
It could have seemed insensitive to some people certainly. Roy Mlakar apologized to the Canadiens managing partner in person about it.
Bah. That's kind of a stretch. How many people would have made the association to Gainey's daughter unless it was pointed out for them?
Depends on how much you follow hockey news. Obviously you don't follow it much, but I'm sure it was no "stretch" of imagination to those in the Canadiens organization who felt it most, having lived closest to it.
This isn't anything to do with the common fans. It's a lack of respect between organizations.
Friends of mine at the game did notice it.
I was at the game and the connection never crossed my mind even though I follow hockey news closely. Nor did it cross the mind of my Habs fan father-in-law who was with me. At the time, we both took it for the typical cheesy skit that it was.
That said, someone in the Sens organization should have had the sense to pick up on it and give the promo a rest for yesterday. I can understand why the Canadiens' org is so upset. It certainly wasn't intentional, but it should have been caught.
Wow James Mirtle you are by far the most over reacting sports writer i have ever read. Your comments made about my Ottawa Senators were just plain uneducated. Not only does the organization have an outstanding community involvement but on many occasions we have shown class up and above the rest of teh NHL. Does the name Roger Neilson ring a bell????? Your whole article just shows me what malice you have in your heart....a bush league team...last I checked we were ahead of you in the standings?????or are you just mad that we just won 2 straight games against you and put you in trouble of missing the playoffs???? On my last note let me just say it was the video guys fault. Owners players and coaches do not let me repeat do not micro manage what the score board displays....get something to really whine about like say the troubles the Habs are having right now....don't just rag on us to shift the attention away from you slumping team. Owe...and get educated!
