Sharks demote Bernier, Carle

Defenseman Matt Carle and right wing Steve Bernier have had different problems recently, but they were dealt the same fate Tuesday: a ticket to the minors.
The general consensus with these moves is that they are (a) short-term ones, and (b) to "send a message."

The message being: "Don't ever lose 8-0 to the Phoenix Coyotes."

The interesting tidbit from The Mercury News article on the demotions, however, comes in a quote from Sharks coach Ron Wilson, as he gives his reasons for the decision to demote Bernier in particular:
"I know people will say, look at his numbers," Ron Wilson said of Bernier. "But we keep all these other numbers that you never see on the stat sheet in the newspaper and they're bad. We've been talking to him and we haven't gotten the response we've needed. Now he can go down there and focus on those details, plain and simple."
Wilson's penchant for his own quirky stats is well-known: He's a new-school coach who uses a computerized database to compile otherwise unavailable numbers on his team.

And, so, we have our answer to the question of 'why was Bernier demoted?'

The computer did it.

The Sharks also have a very sophisticated video package, although one of their guys just defected to the Los Angeles Kings.

Bernier was playing physical one shift, and then taking 4-5 where he was invisible. He was no longer driving the net, displaying his one handed stick maneuvers, or winning battles in the corner.

Carle missed a wide open net against Phoenix, and another against Dallas, and has had trouble getting his shots on net. He needs to make the simple play on defense, and start being himself in the offensive zone. One of the best players I have seen keeping possession on the point.

Another interesting stat from that Merc article, Bernier and Carle's ages. 21 and 22.

At that age I thought Old English 800 was a food group.

Do you have a link about the video guy that left for LA? I'd like to check that out.

I'd imagine bernier got sent down because he's not doing enough with the soft mintues.

Actually, I meant Carle's missed open nets against Phoenix and Anaheim. Both he and Bernier were scratched for Dallas.

I dont have a link for you, but his name was Bob Friedlander, video scouting coordinator for the Sharks. He moved to the Kings just prior to the start of the season.

I have actually been talking with the Sharks about covering some of their tech related activities the last few weeks. If I get more information, I will post it on my blog.
