Korolyuk a Shark... again

The silly deal that took place in October keeps on giving, as the New Jersey Devils essentially hand Alex Korolyuk back to the San Jose Sharks today. I've logged my thoughts over at Globe on Hockey.

Spector and The Battle of California also weighed in on the "deal," while I imagine Tom Benjamin will have his thoughts shortly given how much he enjoyed it the first time around.

(One question for Sharks fans: Does anyone know the likelihood of Korolyuk playing for the team this season? Wilson seemed to indicate in the team's press release that Korolyuk would be arriving in North America shortly, but one of the concerns will have to be his vulnerability to the waiver process should he return midseason from Russia.)

Isn't there a rule in place that says you cannot trade for a player you dealt away in the same year?

Didn't this not allow Calgary to make trade a year or two ago. I can't remember the player or the other team [Colorado or Dallas maybe].

Do you remember anything about this situation?

That was a stipulation included as part of the waiver draft, which no longer takes place under the new CBA. Dean McAmmond was the player left in limbo with the Flames a few years back.

Hey, folks, you wanted a salary cap. Get used to it. With a cap, space underneath it is absolutely a valuable, and tradeable, commodity. The GMs should just stop whining; they are the paid employees of the people who wanted the cap so damned badly.

What happened with Korolyuk? He wasn't in Washington for the Wednesday night game and I heard no mention of him.

According to Victor Chi of the San Jose Mercury-News on today's Sharks-Blackhawks radio broadcast (in progress), the Korolyuk deal has been voided by the NHL.

Korolyuk has apparently decided to stay in Russia. He was scheduled to arrive in San Jose on Sunday for a physical, but he never appeared. The deal was contingent on him showing up and/or passing a physical, so the trade was voided.
