Salo signed
The Canucks signed Salo to a four-year contract extension Thursday that will pay the 32-year-old Finn US$3.5 million a season.A good signing by GM Dave Nonis — although Salo's biggest problem during his tenure with the Canucks has been staying healthy. When healthy, he's a 15-goal, 40-point guy who eats up big minutes.
What's interesting is that, like the Maple Leafs, Vancouver now has its top three defencemen signed long-term. And while Toronto owes $15-million to their trio, the Canucks will payout $10.5-million to a crew that has helped them climb to the top of the league in goals against this season (with help from Bobby Lou, of course).

"With help" should probably read "because of".
Wow, PPP, pithy comment. Keep up the good work. Really. Seriously though, this is a great signing for Vancouver. I'm not sure of the financials but according to your 10.5 mil calculation JM, sounds like his salary doesnt break the bank. I'm a little concerned about the contract length given his injury history but overall I was pleasantly surprised to hear of the re-signing of this impending UFA. - yabanjin
If it's "because of", then how can you explain why the same guy didn't backstop a different team to achieve the same level? His .923 save percentage this season isn't even his careert best, but his 2.26 GAA is. There's a difference between a team that allowed an average of 34+ shots a game and another team that allowed around 28 shots a game. This season, since Christmas, the Canucks have done a great job of penalty killing, clearing rebounds, and intercepting backdoor passes in their zone.
Thanks Anonymous! I appreciate the recognition. Oh wait, that was sarcasm? I guess that is the height of pithiness?
kel, I would say the difference is that the Panthers never installed a defence-first system the same way that the Canucks have.
So "Bobby Lou" should probably read "Bobby Lou and a defense-first system". This is getting pedantic in a hurry.
I think what he is trying to say is would Salo(and Vigneault)look so good with Dan Cloutier in net?
I doubt it, hence the original crack.
PPP has a point, Luongo is this year's Kippersoff - single handedly carrying a sad sack team that possesses two players capable of scoring into the playoffs.
