What's hot in NHL jerseys

Feb. 1-28, 2007

1. Sidney Crosby, Pittsburgh Penguins
2. Daniel Briere, Buffalo Sabres
3. Ryan Miller, Buffalo Sabres
4. Maxim Afinogenov, Buffalo Sabres
5. Thomas Vanek, Buffalo Sabres
6. Jason Pominville, Buffalo Sabres
7. Chris Drury, Buffalo Sabres
8. Joe Sakic, Colorado Avalanche
9. Alex Ovechkin, Washington Capitals
10. Peter Forsberg, Nashville Predators/Philadelphia Flyers
11. Brian Campbell, Buffalo Sabres, and Eric Staal, Carolina Hurricanes
13. Joe Thornton, San Jose Sharks
14. Mike Modano, Dallas Stars
15. Jaromir Jagr, New York Rangers
16. Brendan Shanahan, New York Rangers
17. Henrik Lundqvist, New York Rangers
18. Derek Roy, Buffalo Sabres
19. Marc-Andre Fleury, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Teemu Selanne, Anaheim Ducks
Conclusion? Buffalonians are insane.

The press release also notes that "St. Patrick’s Day-themed" merchandise led sales on the site last month. (I wouldn't mind picking up a Shamrocks jersey myself.)

The other conlusion: making changes to a team's logo is still an effective way to boost short-term jersey sales. We'll see where those Sabres rank next season, and the year after...

Is that the Victoria Shamrocks lacrosse team. Represent, B.C. boy.

The forechecker has nailed it. Get ready for plenty-o-colour and logo changes now that Buffalo has shown the willingness of fans to pay the freight. Vancouver is apparently next in line.

Where do you find these press releases? I always wanted to find out how the Wings sales are doing compared to prior seasons, but they haven't been at the top lately and I can't seem to find anything on NHL.com about the sales of jerseys/team merchandise. Thanks!

Through the NHL's media website.

That's right, Anonymous. Get ready for the new "Strawberry Ice" Red Wings jerseys and "Grapemist" Maple Leafs sweaters, and brace yourself as the Kings make a retro, violet-infused statement that turns L.A. into "Hollyhockeytown".

OK, I've got to retch now...

This also tells me Briere is by far the fans choice when it comes to Briere vs. Drury. Another reason why the Sabres should keep Briere if they can only afford to keep one of the two.

It's too bad there are not more cities that share Buffalo's passion.

I totally disagree with the Forechecker. You're way off. How many teams have had new jerseys in the last five years? How many fan bases have responded like Buffalo?

Case AND Point: How come Anaheim has ONLY one guy on that list (tied for last)? They changed their jeresys. They have a great record. Give the Buffalo fans some credit!

Recipe for jersey sales and a sold out season:
1. New logo.
2. New owner who cares about the team.
3. First place overall in NHL.
4. Dominating media and fan consciousness in a small sports market.
5. Giving renewed hope to a city and region that has plenty of reasons to feel depressed.

There has to be some sort of exponential effect going on; it's not likely that another team will soon experience all of these factors working together.

I don't think any of us in Calgary can buy a jersey anymore.

That recipe is too complicated. Here's an easier one to explain the sales:

Take one new jersey design and add thousands of bandwagon fans. Enjoy short-term benefits.

If they had done this 5 years ago they wouldn't have been able to give away that many jerseys. Anonymous is right, Sabres fans do deserve some credit for being the absolute best bandwagoners (even better than Vancouver!)

Im from Buffalo and I can say that yes there are alot more bandwagon fans this year but we still have a fan-base that for the most part has been following the sabs through the good and the bad (bankrupcy)and we are very knowledgable of the game. Plus what city wont get bandwagon teams when they are 1st in the league? And by the way I think Buffalo's jersey sucks this year and they should have just gone with the retro for our main jersey. But overall give Buffalo credit, no city has embraced a hockey team like this in years (but dont comment cause you havent been here so you wouldnt know).

Insane, and proud of it!

Yeah, there are a lot of new fans, but they're sincere, and long-term from now on. They also know how to make a game exciting!

-Yea, I have an Afinogenov jersey.
