2007 World Hockey Championship
Let's help Stevie Y out

Here are some preliminary musings on who may play for Team Canada at this year's world hockey championship, which begins in Moscow on April 27. (And by all means, let me know if I've missed anyone.)

I'll have more later, including who I'd invite onto the preliminary roster.

UPDATE Here are my picks so far (including the five Steve Yzerman already invited); I'll update this list once more teams fall out of the playoff hunt.

Smyth - Sakic - Williams
Nash - Bergeron - Cammalleri
Gagne - Savard - Horton
Staal - Sillinger - Doan

Jackman - Bouwmeester
Witt - Brewer
Smith - Seabrook

Roloson and Biron? How about adding Cam Ward to the list so that we'll have the two Stanley Cup finalist goalies from last year together?

What is Steve Staios injury status right now? He's always answered the bell in the past and part of Team Canada's formula is to reward such dedication. If healthy I'd fully expect him to be there.

Staios requires surgery for an ACL problem, so he's out.

Given his lack of footspeed and tendency to take a lot of bad penalties on NHL ice, he'd be a bad choice for any IIHF tournament, IMO.

how many spots will Canada keep open for players that go out in the first round? Briere, Campbell, Pominville or Roy might make good additions after the Leafs knock out the Sabres ;)

Leafs have to make the playoffs first.

I'd prefer Stevie Y select players early - have the team practice and gel instead of throwing random superstars from newly booted NHL playoffs teams.

Yeah, Staios and Jovanovski are both injured and shouldn't be on the list — I didn't have time last night to double check everyone's injury status.

You're probably right about Witt, Jes, although he's had one of the better years out of the guys listed on defence. My guess is the blueline is going to borrow a few guys from teams that are knocked out of the playoff early.

I don't like Witt or J Smith on the big ice. If Toronto doesn't make it, how about Colaiacovo for a spot? I know the tendency might be to select McCabe, but Colaiacovo was a star at the WJC a few years back and had a breakout year when healthy.

I also wouldn't mind seeing the likes of Van Ryn, D Keith, and Brett Clark on the blueline. Foote might be nice as a last go for him in a Team Canada uniform.

Jeff Carter or Mike Richards...

Ward's the youngest good Canadian goalie who won't be in the playoffs. It might be good to take him just so he can be in the atmosphere.

Hockey Canada has never called Marc Savard before, and for some reason I don't see it happening now. Either he's been blacklisted or he's just not well-liked.

or Marc Savard can't skate well enough to play in the b league in Switzerland...

Looks like Smyth is off that lineup. Maybe Sundin can fill in, he's got some extra time.
