France returns to top tournament

The French men's national team earned a spot in the 2008 World Championship in Quebec City and Halifax, returning to the top division for the first time since 2004.

France defeated Kazakhstan 3-1 in the all-decisive game of the IIHF World Championship Division I in Qiqihar, China to earn the promotion.
Two teams will be demoted as this year's tournament to way for France and Slovenia next year. Montreal Canadiens netminder Cristobal Huet, an international veteran, did not suit up for the French in the Division I tournament, but will likely see action at next year's event barring a playoff run by his NHL club.

I suppose that's an interesting story -- France makes it into a tournament that will be held in Quebec City during that city's 400th anniversary celebrations. Great catch.
