IIHF releases world rankings

Heading into the world hockey championship in Moscow, here's a look at the men's world rankings as per the IIHF. The top nine teams following the tournament receive an automatic berth in the Vancouver Olympics a little under three years from now (teams marked in purple are taking part):

Depending on what happens in the tournament, Canada can potentially reclaim the top spot (although it's very unlikely). A gold-medal win is worth 1,200 points, while the Canadians need 170 more points than Sweden to move past them.

There's a 40-point interval between first through fifth, meaning if Team Canada wins, Sweden would have to finish seventh or lower in order for the Canadians to climb above them.

Points in the tournament are awarded as follows:

Gold: 1,200
Silver: 1,160
Bronze: 1,120
4th: 1,100
5th: 1,060
6th: 1,040
7th: 1,020
8th: 1,000
9th: 960
10th: 940
11th: 920
12th: 900
13th: 880
14th: 860
15th: 840
16th: 820

The tournament's schedule can be found here.

I don't want to be splitting hairs but Canada is host team and probably goes in automatically.

So I guess it's really top 8 plus the host equals 9.

I read your blog every day and learn lots.

I don't think there's a scenario where Canada can fall out of the top nine given the points breakdown I listed.

Canada comes in last, Belarus wins gold. Canada gets knocked down to 10th.

What? It could happen...

Isn't it a rolling score, so in order to figure out what happens you have to know what scores will be dropped after this world championship.

Read the link — the old scores have already been dropped from these rankings in order to make way for the 2007 scores.
