An ode to Joe

I didn't get to catch all that much of tonight's 4-3 Colorado Avalanche win over the Calgary Flames, but from what I saw, it was all Joe Sakic — something that's become a theme as his team has made a 13-1-2 charge up the standings (likely to nowhere, but I digress).

Sakic played nearly 25 minutes and had four points, giving him 95 on the year.

It was so impressive, I felt it deserving of a schmaltzy ode to Joe over at the AOL Fanhouse.

If Coloado makes the playoffs Sakic deserves the MVP and he might deserve the MVP even if they don't. He has been awesome this year playing a significantly tougher schedule and against better teams than Crosby and the Penguins or Lecavalier and the Lightning do. At the very least he should be getting some MVP consideration but you hardly hear his name mentioned.

How amazing is it that a player of his age is still capable of playing like this. I really hope he gets 100 points. That would be awesome. 5 to go in 3 games, he sure can do it.

Nothin' schmaltzy about that ode, James. You were merely speaking the truth. He ain't called "Super Joe" for nothing, and now that Steve Yzerman's retired, Sakic's getting more recognition as the game's best elder statesman.

THN's recent player poll had Sakic voted the most respected player in the league by a huge margin. 'Nuff said.

Usually guys his age see their offensive production tail off significantly, and they make up for it with defensive excellence. To see a guy get close to 100 points at age 37, and actually INCREASE his production over last season, is quite remarkable.
