What happened in Detroit

In case you missed it, here's the action from Saturday afternoon's game that sets up Game 6 tonight in Calgary:

A couple of comments.

1) Calgary has made two flights to Detroit for this series, and might as well have never gotten on the plane either time. They played exactly one period of hockey, out of nine, which rates above patehtic. Winning games at home that could have gone either way, and not showing up at all on the road, doesn't convince me that you are a playoff quality team.

2) Forget what might have been a butt-end in the last minute. Jerome Iginla should be suspended for his post-game comments. Those were to the effect that his team's antics down the stretch were just trying to provoke some fights so that they'd be fired up for tonight. If facing elimination isn't sufficient to motivate you, then you don't deserve to win. If the only way you can find that motivation is to take cheap shots in order to get the other team to fight you, then you don't deserve to play.

Yesterday was a sorry spectacle. I don't buy into the blather that it's bad for hockey; the game is going to go on regardless. It just says something unpleasant about a group of 20 men and their ability to deal with adversity.

When the going gets tough, the Flames take cheap shots.

That's all you've got James?

No comment on all of the Flames B.S. during those last 5 minutes? No comment on Lankow's free punch on Lebda that resulted in a concussion? No comment's on McLennan's idiocy? Nothing to say about Iginla acting like an ass toward the end and after the game?

The flames should be ashamed of their performance yesterday. Hopefully it will all end tonight and we can move on to a Detroit Dallas series ;)

Take a host of runs at people, and your backup goalie gets suspended for five games. Yeah, that really provides an incentive to behave with class.

That said, the Wings need to just forget about last night and play their game. Watching this series, I am left with the impression that they are a much better team. I can only hope that the eague told the officials to stop their obsession with borderline hooks and holds, and start calling the cross-checking and the interference generated by heavy hits before the puck arrives. This goes both ways, as the Wings have responded in kind.

Everyone just shut up and play hockey.

The real surprise is that there was no mention of Burrows' disgraceful slash and Cowan's third man-in act or Schneider's bad dive after Iggy tapped him on the butt.

Hopefully, the Flames stop with the idiocy and play some hockey in OT (the third just ended).
