Fun with Fischler
It's difficult to imagine a team winning The Stanley Cup with the Human Sieve, Ray Emery, in goal. Yet, it could happen because the Ottawa defense is so strong – from number one to number six – and the forwards so forceful, that Emery barely is tested from game to game.Hard to believe.
My pal J.P. has more of the, er, lowlights over at the Fanhouse.

That is a bit harsh on Emery. Emery is not an elite goalie (yet, he may still develop into one) as he seems to struggle with controlling the puck and giving up rebounds but he is pretty good goalie and lesser goalies have won the Cup and even won the Conn Smythe Trophy (see Cam Ward-2006). Emery is one of the few goalies not to improve his save percentage in the playoffs though so Fischler is correct in saying a significant amount of Ottawa's success in the playoffs is due to the defensemen and improved defensive play of the team in general. In the regular season Ottawa gave up 30.2 shots per game but in the playoffs they cut that down to 25.4 (16% reduction) despite having a several overtime games.
This never would have happened if Stan Fischler was still alive.
As JP aptly noted:
"That's So Maven".
My personal Maven fav though was his assertion last this past season that Markkanen was a better goalie than Roloson, a decision based more on Rolie's role in bringing down Ted Saskin than statistical info.
1) People still listen/read what Stan Fischler has to say? His shtick is so old by now. He intentionally says outrageous things to get a response out of his readers/viewers. Guess he was successful here
Dear Stan,
Thank you for your cogent analysis of our hockey team. You are the best hockey writer in the biz.
Sincerely,
The New York Americans
Successful enough to get you to leave at least five comments on his blog last week, Fauxrumors.
Yep, Stan Fischler is the Howard Stern of hockey. But I'll still take listening to Stan over Pierre McGuire any day.
