The mood in Leafland

A friend of mine here at The Globe sent me this in an email today:
I was walking past a sports bar at Yonge and College last night [in downtown Toronto]. From a distance, I see that it's packed. All of a sudden, there's a huge cheer. My immediate suspicion is that Anaheim scored. When I get close enough to look in the window and see the TV, that's exactly right. Everybody was going nuts in there, cheering and high-fiving.

About 20 minutes later, on my way back in the opposite direction, I happen to pass by again as the clock was ticking down. Everyone in there starts chanting "Go Leafs Go! Go Leafs Go!" at the top of their lungs.

That's too much even for me.
Frankly, this strikes me as a sad state of affairs.

"Pathetic" was the word that leapt to my mind.

Cheer up Leafs fans - help is on the way.

The latest rumour I've heard is that the reason Bob Murray, the Assitant GM of Anahiem, just withdrew from the Columbus GM job competition - even though he was considered a "lock" for the job - is because as soon as the Stanley Cup is over, its going to be announced that Brian Burke will be the new GM of the Leafs and Bob Murray will be promoted to the GM job in Anahiem.

Its rumoured the Leafs have been negotiating with Anahiem to release Burke from his contract for the past several weeks, and an agreement (money and draft choices) was finalized with the League offices in the last few days.

Remember, you read it here first.

Why-if the tables were turned and the Leafs were representing the East instead of the Sens(I know that's a big "if") I think you'd see the same kind of thing in Ottawa.

Why is it "pathetic" or "sad" that Leafs fans wouldn't want to see their rivals win the Cup?

I'd be doing the same thing if it were the Red Wings or even the Predators.

Not wanting your rivals to win the Cup is called being a "fan".

Lyle I'm with you...poor Leafers.

Actually, surprisingly in Ottawa I think a number of the Sens' fans would cheer for the Leafs. I think that sprouts from the fact that many of the older fans were Leafs fans before the Sens became a team, but I know almost as many Toronto fans in Ottawa as I do Ottawa ones.

The whole notion that Ottawa is Canada's team is hokum stirred up by the media. As a Winnipegger, the only reason I would support Ottawa would be to antagonize Leaf fans. Anaheim is not only the most Canadian team in years in terms of roster and playing style, it has true Manitoba content: former beloved Jets Selanne and Carlyle and Winkler's own Dustin Penner. I can't believe anyone in Manitoba would cheer for the Senators, unless their hatred of the Leafs was truly pathological.

It's not pathetic or sad that Leafs fans are cheering for Anahaim. It's pathetic and sad that they feel the need to chant 'Go Leafs Go' when the Leafs aren't even in the final. Just as it makes no sense to me that last night at the Senators game a man was in the front row of the arena wearing a Leafs jersey.

I was in Hoops last night, the chanting was a joke. People were laughing at the absurdity of it. Cheering on Anaheim, on the other hand, was done in earnest.

So, the 'mood' in Leafland, is actually humorous.

Mirtle, do you ever get out in the city you live in?

Ah, he heard that story from me.

You say it was a joke, and maybe it was to some of you, but there were a few guys who were really into it.

I hope you're right, anonymous tipster. The league's biggest d*ckhead running the most hateable franchise. The only thing that could top that would be to announce a Harold Ballard Night some Saturday when the Oilers or Flames come to town.

meanwhile Howard Berger is reporting on the Fan 590 that Ferguson is getting a contract extension...

What sort of a schedule do you think a guy working full-time on a sports desk during the Stanley Cup finals has?

If I'm home before midnight, it's a rarity.

Speaking as someone who works in a similar field to James, working nights at a newspaper doesn't always allow for the wildest social life. Cut the dude some slack.

Bitterness worked as a tonic of choice for Red Sox fans all those years in baseball...maybe Leafs fans are taking a page from their book and rooting for negative achievements because their team appears unable to attain positive goals of any kind.

I'd say the pathetic thing is all of the people taking digs at the Leafs, a team that hasn't been successful in recent memory (which if they're so bad begs the question why does everyone bother with 1967 comments?), not Leafs fans hoping their provincial rival loses.

I have no problem with Leafs fans cheering for the Ducks. Totally understandable to cheer against a hated rival.

But chanting "Go Leafs Go?" That's the pathetic part.

At 8:47 a.m., June 06, 2007, Blogger PPP said...

The real pathetic part was watching the pre-game show on TSN and hearing all the fans around the desk chanting "Leafs Suck".

Your team is in the final and their first thought is to chant "Leafs Suck"? That's sad.

Or the ridiculous level of hatred that fans feel towards a franchise that has done nothing of note since 1967.

Of course Leafs fans are cheering for Anaheim. Just like Manchester United fans were cheering for AC Milan against Liverpool.

I want to slap those 'Leafs suck' Sens fans. I really do. Get over it dudes and dudettes!

For the record I'm a Sens fan.

Let me explain, Chemmey. In the same way Leafs fans/Sens fans hate each other, Leafs fans/Leafs not-fans hate each other. While I admire Leafs fans' loyalty through the bad times and the bad times, when we not-fans get Leafs propaganda jammed down our throats by the CBC, TSN and Sportsnet (broadcasters who, by the way, are apportioned a spot in the broadcast spectrum or on cable distribution by a federal government agency that is paid for by ALL taxpayers, not just 401 ratepayers) our natural reaction is to wonder why the inordinate attention to a team that is, by most on-ice measures, one of the least successful teams of the past four decades? If showing the Leafs battle the Devils to another trap-filled, coma-inducing 2-1 SO loss is the only way CBC can make money, it's time to fold the CBC. If TSN and Sportsnet can only survive as Leafs propaganda organs, force one of them off the lower-end of the cable dial and make room for HGTV or something useful.

Believe it. Without an NHL team in my city to support anymore, I've taken my allegiances elsewhere, to other teams, and the Senators happen to be at the top. So I cheer for them.

While I wouldn't mind seeing Selanne and Carlyle win the Cup, it's not enough for me to turn against the team I've rooted for for years.

There. Nothing to do with the Leafs.
