NHL responds on relocation rules

The National Hockey League says it is certain its franchise relocation practices and policies are in compliance with Canadian competition laws amid an investigation by the country's competition watchdog.

"We are confident that our existing franchise relocation rules and policies, as well as how they are interpreted and applied by the league, are legal and fully enforceable," William Daly, NHL deputy commissioner, told the National Post yesterday.
Sports franchise affairs should be left to the league and team owners. It's their business. It's not a government or an economic issue, and it's certainly not an ideological issue. Marx never played hockey.

Terence Corcoran has a good editorial on this in the Financial pages of today's National post.

What a complete load of crap. Anti-trust theory doesn't derive from Marxism at all. In fact, it would be more accurate to say that Marxism espouses the exact opposite of anti-trust regulation.

Rather, its theoretical origins can be found in the works of someone that most of those involved in business and finance claim to revere, but mostly don't understand: Adam Smith.

"People of the same trade seldom meet together, even for merriment and diversion, but the conversation ends in a conspiracy against the public."

Now, the NHL may be able to argue that the industry it is in is "sports" rather than "hockey," as the article suggests. I don't even pretend to know enough about Canadian common law to have an opinion on that. Making the statement that those who bring anti-trust actions are socialists is just idiotic.

I found Corcoran's editorial to be extremely contradictory to free market thought.
