The (not so) Obtuse Moose

Consider this: the voters had Luongo second in MVP voting behind Crosby, so it would stand to reason that they thought Luongo was the best goaltender, since he finished ahead of Martin Brodeur in the voting for the Hart trophy.

But wait a minute. Brodeur finished ahead of Luongo in the voting for the first all-star team, which means that some of the same voters who put Luongo ahead of Brodeur on their MVP ballots reversed the order when they voted for the first all-star team.
It does not, in fact, mean such a thing — mainly because different sets of voters vote on the Vezina and Hart trophies. The top goaltender is decided by the league's general managers, while the MVP is given out by the Professional Hockey Writers' Association.

There aren't too many GMs moonlighting as hockey scribes.

UPDATE It's me who got it wrong here, as the Moose is talking about the 'top goaltender' in the sense of the first all-star team and not the Vezina. The year-end all-star teams are voted on by the PHWA.

Of course, an all-star team and an MVP award are different animals, but I can see why he's pointing out the difference here.

Ah, time for some of that Jim Beam he talks about. And sincere apologies to the Moose.

Yeah, but who/what decides the all star teams?

Other than Brian Burke, of course

It is strange how it worked out, that's for sure. It's hilarious some people don't see the distinction, though.

So Brodeur was the better goalie but Luongo was more valuable to his team? What's so hard to understand? Marty had a stronger supporting cast (one that scored and played defense) so he wasn't as key to his team's success.

I have serious doubts that that's the case.
