The best of what's left
Take a chance on me...

This was a tough compilation to put together because, honestly, there's not all that many gems left on the unrestricted free agent market. All of these guys have at least a couple of warts, and at best, you're going to find merely a complementary player who can fill a secondary hole.

For what it's worth, here are five guys I think could be diamonds in the rough next season (if they ever find a team).

It wouldn't break my heart if the wings took a chance on Jason Allison (for cheap anyway)

Looks like a pretty solid list. Sorry if we were too demanding -- I thought the UUAS list was great too.

Any team looking to take a chance on Jason Allison needs to run him through a fitness test first. He was looking a little, er, Tkachuk-esque at last sighting, and he never was the fastest guy on two skates. He will have be on a boot camp-style conditioning program this summer if he has a prayer of competing in the NHL the way it is now. Gone are the days when the big Tim Kerr types could get by on lousy skating and great hands.

I agree, but pull him in for a deal similar to what they're doing with Dallas Drake and see what happens. If he really wants it he'll go the mile and be a deal. If he doesn't want it, send him down to the minors and that's that, no big loss. Detroit doesn't need to do a lot to finish high in their division this year, better that they take gambles like this and have cash saved up for loading up before the playoffs then to pick up expensive free agents now.
