Roenick retires

A great American hockey player and a Philly favorite bid adieu to the game, fittingly, on his birthday — July 4.

"I’m retiring; is that still news?" Roenick text messaged The Inquirer.

Jeremy Roenick, 37, leaves the game after 18 years.

Dude gave me an autograph when I was 9 at the 1991 Canada Cup. Other members of Team USA were as far away from the fans as possible. He was right in there, with a huge swarm of kids signing jerseys, hockey cards, programs, hats, pieces of paper... I've never forgotten that.

2 years too late...but I'll miss him. In his heydey, he was one of the best on the ice and off of the ice. Always gracious with fans, you could count on JR for more than the standard cliches. JR always appeared to enjoy himself and the fans.

You wouldn't believe the volume of emails I get like that now.

I was going to say in this post that Roenick should have hung on for goal No. 500, but given he only scored 20 in his last 128 games, it would take him another 32 games to post another five goals.

Even still, I'm guessing the Islanders could use him to help pad their salary.

I'm sure we haven't seen the last of JR, there's so many bit parts on tv shows to do :) (I actually watched an episode of The Ghost Whisperer b/c he was on it). I'd love to see him on a TSN panel every once in awhile, or as a guest host of OTR.
