Schneider signs in Vancouver

Vancouver Canucks Senior Vice-President and General Manager Dave Nonis announced today that the Canucks have signed goaltender Cory Schneider. In keeping with club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Schneider's reportedly the Canucks' top prospect, which is an interesting problem to have given the fact Roberto Luongo has a lock on 70+ games as the team's starter for the next few years. Reports had Nonis attempting to unload Schneider to move up in the entry draft last month, but that didn't happen and there's a good chance he'll be with the Canucks as Luongo's backup or as the starter with the Manitoba Moose.

His numbers with Boston College, both as a rookie and a sophomore, were terrific, but that's a big jump for a goaltender to make, especially at 21. It'll be interesting to see how this develops.

I saw Schneider play a few times, and I just wasn't that impressed. He's not bad, by any stretch, but nothing special. Hockey East is a low scoring league, and Schneider's save percentage and goals against average were almost exactly in the middle of goalies in the conference.

If a WCHA goalie puts up those numbers, and Brian Elliott and Bobby Goepfert came close, I'd be more impressed.

I read it's almost certain for him to play as the starter in the minor than as the backup in the NHL. Nobody is expecting him to make the jump this upcoming season or even the one after. I agree in all likelihood, he will be traded before playing an NHL game for the Canucks (other than pre-season).

I agree with Kel. You can't develop as a goalie sitting on the bench watching Roberto play. He will be the number one goalie for the Manitoba Moose, and if he plays well there he will be brought up to the Canucks once a month or so and play a couple of NHL games to showcase him for a trade.
