Staals gone wild

Carolina Hurricanes center Eric Staal was one of 14 people arrested in Cook County, Minn., early Saturday morning and charged with disorderly conduct and obstructing the legal process. One of his three younger brothers was also arrested.
In addition to Staal, 22, his younger brother Jordan, 18, and a number of his cousins were arrested as well. Jordan Staal, who just finished his rookie year with the Pittsburgh Penguins, was also charged with consumption of alcohol while under 21 years of age.
Here's a look at where the brothers got into trouble. The drinking age in Minnesota was raised to 21 back in 1986; it is only 19 in Ontario.

It doesn't appear that the other Staal who is of legal age (at least in this country), Marc Staal, was at the party, meaning he was perhaps looking to avoid what ended up happening.

An interesting story, anyway, and I wonder what it'll do to the boys' squeaky clean image. It doesn't sound as if any serious charges will arise from the incident.

UPDATE Eric McErlain at the AOL FanHouse has unearthed the boys' mugshots.

Wow, you can't get much more middle of nowhere than that.

This will surely take some of the heat off the NFL and NBA as far controversial stories amidst the sports landscape eh? I don't want to sound too hypocritical when I say this, but this is just some young people being young.

I was just up there this past weekend, a few miles down the shore. Absolutely beautiful area.

Though I'm wondering how much traffic there could have been to yell at at 4am on a Monday.

Probably some commuters coming into Toronto for work.

Don't worry, Marge Gunderson is on the case.

I think the population of Lutsen is about 360 people. They must have yelled at a cop car, a newspaper delivery truck, and a pregnant lady going out for pickles and ice cream.

I can just see Marge as one of the Staal brothers runs down the street -- Oh for Pete's sake, he's fleeing the interview! He's fleeing the interview! (Fargo is one of my favourite films of all time.)

For whatever reason, American cops seem to get really snippy, to use another Marge-ism, about Canadian kids coming down there to get drunk. The cops in Lake Placid, for example, filled their quota book on us at a hockey tournament one time for having "open liquor", otherwise known as beers in the parking lot after the game. We were told later by some locals that it was our Ontario plates that brought them over.

Beers in the parking lot after the game.... doesn't that fall under life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness? It takes in all 3.

How stupid do you have to be to hold a drinking party with your little brothers in Minnesota, when you're just a couple of hours over the border from Ontario? I mean, I get the appeal of not being near Mom, but shit, dudes, think here!

It wouldn't have mattered for Jordan, doogie. He's still 18 until September.

Of course, if you're referring to the possible lenience of Canadian cops towards hockey stars...
