A return to the minors

"I never thought I'd say this, but I'm happy to sign a minor-league contract."
It's been more than seven years since Boucher played with the Phantoms, who he broke into pro hockey with in 1997 at age 20. Back then, he was an up-and-comer, one of those rare netminders picked in the first round and a heralded star in junior hockey.

The pinnacle of his hockey career came two years later, when he took the Flyers to the conference finals as a rookie. Since then, he's battled injury and confidence problems, and has been relegated to backup duty with poor teams.

Boucher sought out a minor-league deal with an organization he had success with way back when, something a few other goaltenders — not to mention the skaters still out there — are going to have to seriously think about. Where else will Robert Esche, Alex Auld and J-S Aubin find work next season?

Credit Boucher for being able to read the tea leaves. He knows his choice was AHL or Europe. Hope for Nittymaki to flame out and head back to Europe and Boucher has a shott as an NHL backup making NHL money. Frankly, that makes him a financial genius. Compare that to guys like Joseph, Auld and Billion-Dollar Belfour, who can't figure out that there are no No. 1 jobs to be filled and that the No. 2 slot is paid <$1M. As for JS Aubin, phhhhhhh, he was never any good to begin with. Time to join dad's construction company.

I do not think San Jose has a lot of money to spend, but right now they need a solid veteran to back up Evgeni Nabokov for 10-15 games a season.

Dmitri Patzold is the odds on favorite for the slot right now, but he did not instill a lot of confidence with his play over the last 2 years. Thomas Griess is the goalie of the future, but needs more time in the AHL.

I just can't believe that Ty Conklin has a job while Alex Auld goes unsigned. If the Leafs somehow manage to move Raycroft (I'm not holding my breath) I wouldn't mind them picking up Auld.
