The collective bargaining agreement
RFA compensation figures

Irish Blues has been running the definitive NHL salary website for a while now, so it's not surprising he's got all kinds of relevant info when it comes to the CBA and other NHL matters. If you've got a cap-related question, he's your man.

Given we'll hear from Brian Burke as to how he's going to proceed with the Dustin Penner offer sheet, here's a look at the updated RFA compensation figures, which change each off-season along with the salary cap based on rising league revenues:
Amount: Compensation Due
$773,442 or less: None
$773,442-$1,171,882: 3rd-round pick
$1,171,882-$2,343,764: 2nd-round pick
$2,343,764-$3,515,645: 1st- and 3rd-round pick
$3,515,645-$4,687,527: 1st-, 2nd- and 3rd-round pick
$4,687,527-$5,859,412: Two 1st-, one 2nd-, one 3rd-round pick
$5,859,412 or more: Four 1st-round picks
The revamped dollar figures, likely, explain why you're seeing offer sheets like the Penner one for $4.25-million and not the $3.999-million type offers we have seen tossed around in the past.

Here's a look at the original figures coming out of the lockout.

Interesting. Makes me wonder why Lowe wouldn't have offered something in the lower bracket, let's say $3.5 million/year for three years which would have saved him that second-round pick and significant salary/cap space...and still would have made it difficult for Burke to match. It would have still been an overpay, but I suspect we wouldn't be seeing the same level of angst in the Oiler blogs at that level.

You'd think there would be lots of potential RFA offer sheets from teams with cap space in that $2.3-$3.5 million range -- decent players at that price, and enough money to put the squeeze on teams tight against the cap. Painful for teams to give up a first-round pick, but in that salary range it would be for a proven player.
