Mark Smith signs with Calgary

The Calgary Flames have signed free agent forward Mark Smith.

The 29 year-old checker had spent his entire career with the San Jose Sharks organization after being drafted in the ninth round in 1997.
Another San Jose connection for Calgary GM Darryl Sutter, who coached Smith with the Sharks a few years back.

Great signing by Calgary. Size was a little bit of a concern, but he was one of the catalysts for the team on many nights. He played an in your face game, and could chip in the occasional goal.

The only problem in San Jose is there are 5 or 6 starting centers already on the lineup.

Smith got an one-way offer during the summer but his agent adviced him to turn it down because there were supposed to be better offers coming his way.

Bad mistake and all Smith had available later was NYR try-out. Anybody know if this Calgary deal is one-way?

Mark Smith is useful player.

definitely wasn't a catalyst to the team on any night and am definitely glad he is gone. waste of a roster spot.

Alright, how about a catalyst for the team on some nights.

If you do not think he can contribute on a 4th line in the NHL, there is nothing really more to say except to check back on this post at the end of the season and then tell me how he did.

The Merc reported this morning that Smith turned down a 2-way contract offer with the Rangers, and accepted a one-year, $487,500 contract before the Calgary game yesterday.
