There were times this summer when defenceman Bryan Muir, scrambling for ice to keep himself in game shape, would find himself in the same dressing room as Mike Johnson and Jeff O'Neill, two ex-Leafs in the same predicament — NHLers without NHL contracts.

"We'd kind of sit there and look at each other, throw our hands in the air and say, I don't really know (what's going on)," recounted Muir.
