Saturday night open thread

I've got no clue if anyone's out there, but with the rest of Toronto running around dressed as ghouls and naughty nurses tonight, I'm in The Globe and Mail bunker here, updating the website until 2 a.m.

(Our regular web fellow, Ian Denomme, decided to take in the Leafs-Rangers from Madison Square Garden, so I'm donating my Saturday to a good cause.)

With 12 games on the go, at least I'll have some company.

Philadelphia at Boston, 4 p.m.
San Jose at Columbus, 5:30 p.m.
Ottawa at New Jersey, 7 p.m.
Montreal at Pittsburgh, 7 p.m.
Carolina at N.Y. Islanders, 7 p.m.
Toronto at N.Y. Rangers, 7 p.m.
Buffalo at Tampa Bay, 7:30 p.m.
Florida at Nashville, 8 p.m.
Atlanta at Chicago, 8:30 p.m.
Washington at St. Louis, 8:30 p.m.
Dallas at Phoenix, 10 p.m.
Edmonton at Los Angeles, 10 p.m.

The Senators really do exist. Hope they remember what this hockey thing is. What brutal scheduling. 7 games in 10 days and then 5 days off. A full week since their last game, and another 4 days after tonight until their next one.

Devils to open the new arena with a win.

Did you draw the short straw, James? :)

Here they just call it "being under 40."

Hey, I'm not the only guy working a Saturday night.

I'd like to hear a little more about these nurses, James.

I think they're headed for Clubland, not the newspaper's editorial department.

Not much of a party atmosphere here, I'm afraid.

Anybody see Randy Jones hit Patrice Bergeron from behind?

Bergeron business is in the post below this one.

I've got Montreal-Pittsburgh on, Crosby versus Price and Jim Hughson calling the game. Good stuff.

Leafs look like one of those teams who play exactly well enough to lose. Two years ago, Sundin would man up and hit a big fly and they'd be tied but I don't know if he has that gear anymore.

You see, God knows I hate the Leafs and he likes to punish me.

San Jose lost again on the road, this time 2-1 to Columbus. Maybe the team should never have a curling tournament again. It seems to make them play quite poorly.

The Blue Jackets are amazing... it just shows how much a coach like Ken Hitchcock can do with a defence-first system like that. The Dallas Stars of his era were nearly unwatchable on some nights, and I'm afraid Columbus can get in the playoffs as a lesser-talented version of that club.

Good for the fans there, anyway, who deserve some hope.

I'm really glad people are starting to notice my boys. The Jackets really earned that win. What a game.

If I remember correctly, Columbus really started to turn it around near the end of last season. They just needed some direction and pushing, and a coach with a reputation could get them to listen.

They were a soft team last year, and I'm glad that's over for them.

The Islanders are getting pounded 8-2 tonight at home, which makes me wonder if the Blog Box gang is in attendance.

This one looks ugly.

Anyone notice how many points the Leafs "terrible" defence has?

Crosby's diving makes me want to puke. I wonder how his new perfume is coming along, now that he has his clothing line established.

Starting to get used to seeing this in Chicago: 5:08, Patrick Kane 4 (power play) (Jason Williams, Jonathan Toews)

It's 1-1 there against Atlanta, although it's not being televised.

Never thought I would have to lay down this comment:

"What a bunch of cement hands Pittsburgh and Montreal have"

-at least tonight

Brind'Amour got his third career hat trick tonight. And he even smiled about it.
