James, what are the average shots per game so far this year - and how does it break down between ther east and west, and compare to previous years?
With all the high scoring games lately it appeared to me there was more offense so far this year. However, after crunching the numbers this isn't the case. As of this morning scoring is as follows:
East: 6.052 goals per game
West: 5.470 goals per game
Total League: 5.750 goals per game.
On a league wide basis this is slightly BELOW last years average of 5.891 goals per game. Again, the eastern teams are producing substantially more offense than the western teams.
Its interesting that while the Canucks have the third worst shots for, they actually are scoring more than average (3.0 goals per game vs. 2.735 goals for the western average). While their shots against are about average, they are giving up way more goals (3.5 goals per game vs. 2.735 western average). Their defence has been horrible and Luongo is only average so far.
Hey Frank - given shots have remained relatively stable for the last 25 or so years, I'm willing to bet they'll fall into the exact same range this year. There hasn't been a significant change that would alter the shot totals.
James, what are the average shots per game so far this year?
I show it as 29.1 shots per team per game.
and how does it break down between the east and west?
Eastern teams are taking 30.5 shots per game, while western teams are taking 27.7 shots per game.
and compare to previous years?
I only have the two previous (postlockout) years:
2006-07: East-30.2 shots/gm, West-29.0 shots/gm
2005-06: East-30.6 shots/gm, West-29.4 shots/gm
Thanks stat monkey.
