Stop the presses ...

Andrew Raycroft's starting tonight!

Sports talk radio in Toronto's alive with the sound of a goalie controversy, even though we've yet to drop the puck.

This was all rather predictable actually — and especially considering the Maple Leafs open the season with back-to-back games. Even Martin Brodeur and Roberto Luongo see their backups come in more often than not in a back-to-back situation, so the only decision here by Paul Maurice was which netminder plays at home tonight.

And given Vesa Toskala was roasted mercilessly in preseason games in Toronto, why not spare him that against the best team in the Eastern Conference?

Still, at some point, he's going to have to be ready to shine in the NHL's brightest spotlight, and you get the feeling this season Leafs Nation isn't settling for mediocrity.

It's starting to get goofy here. Already.

It's been goofy here since May 1967.

Raycroft played much better than Toskala in the pre-season so it makes sense to start him. Toskala gets the tame ottawa crowd (now only 40% Leaf fans!) as his regular season baptism.

Actually, I heard Raycroft say "yeah, I think I'm starting" and Maurice still wouldn't comment.
