Thursday night open thread

Well, since this was a riotous, 84-comment thread on Tuesday night, when there were only four games, why not spring another one of these things for tonight?

Nine games on the schedule, although none are really leaping out at me as barn burners. The late Detroit in San Jose match-up may be the best of the bunch, and the fact that Chris Osgood likely gets the start changes things a bit. It's been a struggle so far this season for Dominik Hasek.

Other backups drawing in tonight: Craig Anderson, Alex Auld, Kevin Weekes and Carey Price. Marc Denis may get the start for Tampa.

I'm in the newsroom, where we'll likely be watching Bryan McCabe being booed on the big screen.

Islanders @ Washington - DiPietro's been very good
Rangers @ Atlanta - Waddell returns as coach after another firing
New Jersey @ Philadelphia - Devils on the second game of a back-to-back
Tampa Bay @ Boston - Bruins and Tim Thomas have surprised
Florida @ Toronto - Panthers were awful in Montreal but won
Montreal @ Ottawa - Ray Emery's back but he's on the bench
Los Angeles @ Calgary - Kings already got this week's win
Edmonton @ Phoenix - Coyotes need to stick to Operation Lottery Ball
Detroit @ San Jose - Time for Cheechoo/Marleau to pass JR in goals

Dare I make picks again?

Islanders, Rangers, Philadelphia, Boston, Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton and San Jose.

Hey, I was actually 3-for-4 on Tuesday, for all the doom saying. The only one I was wrong on was the Kings beating the Wild.

I'll go with NYI, ATL, PHI, TB, FLA, OTT, LA, PHO & DET.

During last night's Pens/Devils game, the Pittsburgh announcers kept saying how "exciting it is" to watch Devils hockey now.

I don't think "exciting" and "Devils hockey," belong anywhere near each other. Not in the same sentence, not even in the same paragraph. And not even the same newspaper page. Seeing them eight times a year makes me want to barf. Can't wait until they retool the schedule so maybe we'll get to see some Western teams here in Philly.

In fact, I'm getting my Kings tickets next week. Yeah, basically only going to see Kopitar.

Hopefully the det/sj game tonight will be better than the det/anaheim game a few days ago.

There were like 500 penalties called. It was unwatchable.

Well, there was one thing I'm already wrong about: Brodeur unexpectedly gets the start for the Devils.

And Atlanta jumps out to a quick 2-0 lead in New York.

Waddell having a good affect thus far.

Anybody know what's up with Atlanta's goalie change? Or is this just another case of not being able to trust Yahoo's game reports?

Once the Hartnell-Carter-Kapanen line gets going, they are going to score some pretty goals.

Kapanen keeps unleashing the spin-o-rama moves that I've usually only seen in the NHL games.

ATLANTA (AP) — Thrashers goalie Kari Lehtonen left a game against the New York Rangers in the first period Thursday night, appearing to have re-injured his troublesome groin.

I have Lehtonen in one of my leagues. He was killing me earlier, so at least now I don't have to play him if he's injured long-term.

Nick Foligno scored for Ottawa, and he did the jump. He was interviewed during the intermission and said that his teammates were pressuring him to do it if he socred.

Apparently Atlanta actually DID have to win sometime...just being anticipatory to call it on Tuesday instead of Thursday.

Hasek has been healthy thus far (although not playing especially well). Maybe he did a "Portrait of Dorian Gray" thing with Lehtonen's groin.

James, a few people have mentioned Pat Quinn's name for the now open Thrasher's job. In your opinion wouldn't a guy like Quinn, who at 64 is likely not interested in a rebuilding job, want to wait a month or two into the season to see if a better job opens up? The way the Sharks have started, consistently inconsistent yet again, a complete inability to put together 60 solid minutes, etc. it's not inconceivable that Ron Wilson gets axed before the end of the season. Do you see McCabe being traded this year? San Jose has the need and cap room to make it work, but I've got to think Doug Wilson might want to wait and take a run at Dan Boyle if Tampa Bay falls out of the race.

I talked a bit about Quinn earlier today; the biggest reason he won't get the Atlanta job is that he would suddenly be a top candidate to replace Don Waddell as GM. (Quinn is certainly interested; I think he regrets passing on the Boston job prior to last season.)

But I think they'll give it to John Anderson.

I'm not big on trade speculation, but I don't think either McCabe (who had a no-trade clause) or Boyle will be dealt this season.

Can Tampa Bay really afford to re-sign Boyle without breaking up their big 3? I don't know what they will end up doing but they must be having that discussion. Going cheap on goaltending hasn't exactly panned out for them.

I agree with your points about Quinn in Atlanta, but even without that factor I just don't think it makes any sense for a 64 year old coach to go into a situation where ownership is a mess and talent-wise the cupboard is pretty bare. Hossa is great but injured, and at this point Kovalchuk looks more like Kovalev than Ovechkin. Quinn is a big enough name to land on a by the start of next season, if not this year. The Thrasher's job makes no sense for him even if he is itching to come back.

That should read that Quinn is a big enough name to land on a better team by the start of next season, if not sooner.

Osgood looked great tonight. Congrats to Matt Ellis on his first (and game winning) nhl goal.

The San Jose sportscasters on FSN don't know how to pronounce half of the wings players names. It's Datsyuk not Dotseeyoooook.

Quinn was never offered Boston job. He said that he would have taken it in a heartbeat if it was offered.

Boston and Quinn? Irish heaven.

If you're going to dispute what I say, please do some due diligence:

"Pat Quinn has recently admitted that he misses coaching and somewhat regrets not taking the Boston Bruins job he was offered last season. Quinn cited the price tag as the main reason for not taking the gig."
