The Penner problem
Bob Stauffer made this point today to me prior to going on air, and Eric Duhatschek makes it on Globe on Hockey again, but with the Oilers in last place, Kevin Lowe's decision to gamble on Dustin Penner is emitting an odour at the moment.
Here's Duhatschek:
... five weeks into the new season, the Edmonton Oilers were statistically the worst team in the league. And the worst team at the end of the season has the best chance to win the entry draft lottery which – sadly for the Oilers – would only mean that the Anaheim Ducks might be going to the microphone to announce the first player overall in what is expected to be an excellent draft class in 2008.It's a good thing the draft is in Ottawa and not Edmonton this year.

Well if those two said it it must be true! Some other people might have been saying that for months, cough, but what do they know? :)
Funny that Stauffer would say anything like that. He must still be really mad at Lowe for trading Joffrey Zoolander.

Sadly, I'm not seeing the Oilers crowd storming the stage as Burke goes up there to take John Tavares. That would actually be pretty compelling television (to say nothing of a moral victory).

Your forget how many members of the Oilogosphere live in Toronto. Hell, I might even make the trip out just for that.

I know, I know... but this blog serves more than those who love the Oilogosphere.
(Besides, can you make this point too many times?)
Apparently not.
Martyr complexes run amok in the Oilogosphere. Good thing the team sucks this year, nobody would know what to complain about.
It's a circular argument. Without Penner, the Oilers might not even be in a position to finish last and not pick first.
I never understood how Penner became such a hot commodity. (I know, easy to say now.) But look at his career numbers on hockeydb.com. What he's done so far with the Oilers is typical for his career. He's simply not that good.
I think it's very, very amusing, and exactly what Kevin Lowe deserves for doing something so stupid. Throwing that amount of money at Penner was desperation at it's finest, and now they might end up having given the Ducks not only Pronger, but Tavares.
How does Kevin Lowe still have a job? Then again, I wondered that about Bobby Clarke for a long, long time until he finally "stepped-down."
For the same reason Harry Sinden and Bob Pulford kept their jobs for 47 years: they made money for their bosses.
Come on, girls, it's not about winning, it's about making money.
Don't the best teams do both?
isn't it picks in this years draft, not next years? which would mean Stamkos, not Tavares, gets given to the Ducks.
If i was Burke I'd be thanking Lowe.
But that would just create more fodder for conspiracy theorists.

I agree. You should try being more positive about the Oilogosphere. You constant complaining is tiresome.
Andy, nobody's yet claimed those spikes I offered up, if you want to nail yourself to something.
The way the Ducks are playing (just 4 points ahead of EDM), the Oilers - who own Anaheim's 1st round pick from the Pronger deal - could end up with a pretty high spot too.
And, yes I also dont see how Tavares fits into this discussion.
The only way tavares fits is from the Oilers being this bad again next year, and Lowe pulling off another duzie. Maybe an 8 million dollar a year offer sheet to an Alex Steen type.

Mike, I have a good relationship with James. We tend to go to each other's site and poke (that sounded way filthier than intended). And I really do want my team to do well. I'd rather be happy than disappointed. Suggesting I want to crucify myself is...well...misplaced.
Andy, fair enough, I apologize.
